Islām is the surrender to Allāh, the Exalted, through Tawḥīd (His divine right to be worshipped alone) inwardly, and submission to Him outwardly through obedience, along with disavowal from shirk (associating partners with Him) and its people. It consists of three matters: submission to Allāh internally (i.e., sincerity of the heart to Allāh alone, such that one is humbled, obedient, and devoted in monotheism); outward submission (i.e., the limbs obey and comply with His commands); and disavowal from shirk and those who commit it. Imām Muḥammad bin ʿAbd al-Wahhāb (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: “It is submission to Allāh through Tawḥīd, yielding to Him through obedience, and disavowal of shirk and its people.” This is the religion of Allāh, which He accepts from no one except through it. Islām has two meanings: The first meaning is the General Meaning: Islām is the religion of all the Prophets. Allāh accepts no religion other than it. Allāh the Exalted says: “Indeed, the religion with Allāh is Islām.” [Sūrah Āl ʿImrān: 19] And He says: “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islām, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.” [Sūrah Āl ʿImrān: 85] Whoever seeks a religion other than Islām — from the time of Ādam (peace be upon him) until the Day of Resurrection — it will never be accepted from him. Islām, in its general meaning, is the religion of all the Prophets. It is Tawḥīd of Allāh, disavowal of shirk and its people, and obedience to every Prophet of his time in that which he was sent with. Read more
