Julianna and Douglas met thirteen years ago during graduate school orientation at Adelphi University while earning their Master’s in Social Work. What started as a friendship between two people from very different backgrounds quickly became a lifelong bond — strengthened in equal parts by shared values and shared meals. They both had the similar way of grounding themselves and coping with the stressors of life– through cooking and swapping recipes at the end of the day.As they built their careers and eventually opened a psychotherapy private practice together, the kitchen remained their favorite place to connect. Recipes were concocted to optimize mental health, then traded, meals were cooked, and stories were shared. Julianna’s cooking is rooted in her Sicilian heritage, inspired by her Nonna and seven Zias (aunts) who taught her that food is love. Douglas’ passion began with his grandmother and grew through family traditions, comfort food, and his early culinary training — always with an eye toward perfecting the details (especially his burgers).Their styles may differ — Italian classics with a twist meet Southern-inspired comfort food — but the intention is the same: to bring people together. Every recipe in this book carries generations of stories, care, and connection. Read more
