Unlock the Ancient Wisdom of the Ekottara Agama Sutra: A New Translation and Commentary for the Modern SeekerEmbark on a transformative journey through the Ekottara Agama Sutra, a foundational text of early Buddhism offering a systematic and accessible presentation of the Buddha's teachings. This new translation, meticulously crafted for contemporary readers, brings the timeless wisdom of this often-overlooked scripture to life. What is the Ekottara Agama Sutra? The Ekottara Agama Sutra (also known as the Increasing by One Agama) is one of the four major Agamas (collections of discourses) in the early Buddhist tradition. While comparable to the Anguttara Nikaya of the Pali Canon, it presents unique content and perspectives on the Buddha's teachings, organized around numerical themes that make complex concepts easier to grasp. Traditionally attributed to the Mahasamghika school, the Ekottara Agama Sutra is believed to have been compiled after the Buddha's death by his disciples, including Kashyapa and Ananda. The text offers a fascinating glimpse into how the Buddha's message was transmitted and interpreted in the early Buddhist community. This translation is based on the Chinese version, preserved as Taisho Tripitaka No. 125.The two primary figures involved in the Chinese translation of the Ekottarika Agamaare:Zhu Fonian,Dharmanandin. In 385 CE, Zhu Fonian completed the initial translation of the Ekottarika Agama, which Dharmanandin had recited. This first translation comprised 41 volumes, but it was later revised and expanded to 51 volumes by Zhu Fonian. The Chinese translation of the Ekottarika Agama available to us today is this revised edition. It is believed that Zhu Fonian added new material to the initial translation and replaced some sections with new content. During this revision process, Zhu Fonian likely consulted other Indic source texts and Chinese translations to improve the translation and make creative modifications. These translation and revision efforts took place in the latter half of the 4th century CE.About this Translation and Commentary:This new translation aims to make the Ekottara Agama Sutra accessible to a wider audience, providing a clear and accurate rendering of the text in modern English.
