Traditionally, it is revered as a teaching of the definitive meaning (nītārtha), representing the final and most profound stage of the Buddha's wisdom. This sūtra was the first to clearly articulate several revolutionary doctrines that would decisively shape the course of later Buddhist philosophy, including the concept of the ālaya-vijñāna (the storehouse consciousness) as the foundation of all experience, the theory of the Three Natures (trisvabhāva) for understanding reality, and the framework of the Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma for systematizing the Buddha's entire corpus of teachings. His Chinese translation of the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra surpassed all previous versions in its precision and philosophical depth, establishing itself as the definitive and most authoritative text for the study of Yogācāra thought in East Asia.Among the many brilliant minds who studied under Xuanzang, one of the most luminous was Woncheuk, a gifted scholar-monk from the Silla kingdom (modern-day Korea). The commentary he authored, the Jie shenmi jing shu (Commentary on the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra), is far more than a simple exegesis. Woncheuk systematically organized the sūtra’s complex doctrines with unparalleled logical rigor, often comparing and synthesizing various Indian interpretations. His commentary became an indispensable compass for later generations of scholars navigating the vast forest of wisdom contained within the sūtra.About This TranslationThis book is an attempt to render into modern language both the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra (based on Xuanzang's seminal translation) and, as an essential guide, Woncheuk's masterful commentary.
